INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS
INTRODUCTION TO INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS
The legal environment for international trade and investment in the post-Cold War era

By W. Gary Vause

The end of the Cold War era ushered in a period of unprecedented opportunity in international business. The seismic changes in the political and economic landscape opened many markets formerly closed to the West, but also introduced new challenges for traders and investors. A whole new legal framework was required in the emerging market economies, and the rule of law continues to expand its reach. The multilateral system of trade regulation, which had prevailed since World War II, was challenged by the growth of regionalism, bilateralism and unilateralism. The new General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) significantly increased the international controls on trade in both goods and services.
This book provides a practical and authoritative guide to students, business persons, lawyers and other professionals sharing an interest in the contemporary international business environment. It not only provides a step-by-step analysis of trade transactions, it also offers valuable insights into international trade policies. This book focuses on U.S. trade law and policies, but does so in a broad context taking into account the special role of lesser developed countries.

The Author is Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Dispute Resolution at Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg, Florida. Professor Vause has extensive international experience in training and designing programs to adapt principles of Western legal systems to the needs of developing countries, socialist countries, transitional democracies and the newly emerging market economies. He has three decades of experience as a mediator and arbitrator in complex disputes.
